Meet Prof. Florence Banku, University of Calabar (UNICAL) First Female VC-Indeed hard work they say pays, Professor Florence Obi of the Faculty of Education has emerged as the University of Calabar, UNICAL First Female Vice-Chancellor. She was appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of University of Calabar (UNICAL) by the Governing Council.

Prof. Florence Obi will take over from Prof. Zana Akpagu, whose tenure ends on November 30, 2020.
Prof. Florence, the former Deputy Vice-chancellor (Academic) is a mother of four and grandmother of six from Bansan Osokom, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, whose successful academic voyage began at the University of Calabar in March 1990 (30 years ago)

She has been a Professor of Special Needs Education for 13 years (Having been made a Full Chair Professor in 2007). Her leadership role in University of Calabar began in 1993 immediately after her return from a Scholarship programme in Jodan Hill College, Glasgow, UK, when as an Assistant Lecturer, she was appointed Coordinator, World-Wide Fund for Nature/Nigerian Conservation Foundation (WWF/NCF) funded Schools and Community Education programmes in 1993.
Also speaking, Obi promised to run an inclusive administration, adding, “I’m happy and return all the glory to God. I have just received my appointment letter from the 12th Council as Vice Chancellor-elect. The process was free and fair, and I promise to run an inclusive administration.”
One of the candidates, Prof Joseph Asor, while reacting to the outcome, said, “We lost. Prof Florence Obi won. I came third. I have congratulated her. May God give her the strength and wisdom to pilot the affairs of our university. I thank you all for the support.”
